The International Center for Communication Studies conducted the 17th EdukCircle Convention on Media Communication at AFP Theater in Quezon City last October 5, 2019. It was attended by students from 43 schools in the Philippines.

PASSING THE KNOWLEDGE TO FUTURE JOURNALISTS

Four respected and veteran journalists were invited to share their expertise on broadcast journalism namely, Pia Arcangel, Ruth Cabal, Mariz Umali and Raffy Tima.

GMA Network’s News anchor and host Pia Arcangel, opened the convention with her talk focused on modern journalism.

Her session entitled Riding the New Wave of Modern Journalism geared towards the understanding of what journalism is. She compared traditional journalism with modern journalism, emphasizing that regardless of the platform, journalists must remain true to their core values.

BACK TO BASIC: Ruth Cabal of CNN Philippines teaches the basics of news reporting.

 

To get the right answer, one must ask the right question. News Anchor Ruth Cabal of CNN Philippines emphasized that interviews are important because it is one of the cornerstones of good journalism. In her talk entitled Basics of TV Reporting, she tackled the discipline of questioning by sharing her personal experiences in interviewing different people.

LOVE FOR NEWS: Mariz Umali shares her 17-year experience as a TV Reporter

 

Mariz Umali, News Producer and Anchor from GMA Network, discussed the qualities of news. She stressed out that journalism is about delivering fair report and news. A journalist must be able to present all sides of the story and be insistent in getting the necessary information for the development of the story. Her talked was entitled News: Going Back to Basics Amidst the Challenges of Social Media Era.

TECHY JOURNALISM: Raffy Tima asserts that Technology and Journalism are intertwined

 

Technology and Journalism are intertwined, that is the principle of News Anchor and Reporter Raffy Tima of GMA Network. He mentioned that with the emergence of modern technology, news broadcasting has become easier and convenient. He showcased how modern technology can change the landscape of broadcasting. Drone shots and videos captured using 360 camera were played to justify the advantages of using technology in producing news.

 

9th EDUKCIRCLE AWARDS

ICCS also gives recognition to different TV and News personalities through The EdukCircle Awards.

Among the awardees are:

  • Alden Richards“Most Influential Male Endorser of the Year”.
  • Eula Valdes – “Best Supporting Actress (TV series)”

  • Tony Gonzaga –Best Female Reality Show Host”.
  • Atom Araullo – “Best Documentary Journalist”.
