The LPU Pirates Junior basketball team hooped in two Ws as they trampled Xavier School Nuvali and CI Canlubang in the opening day of Calamba West District Meet.
DEMOLITION JOB
Pirates smoothly sailed through its first game of the season crushing Xavier School Nuvali, 111-39.
The game started with a 22-point lead by Pirates in the first quarter. By the second half of the game, Eduardo “Dos” Montierro, the head coach of LPU Junior Pirates, gave all his players a chance to play.
“Ano lang naman iyon eh, para lang makakuha ng kumpiyansa ang mga bata,” Coach Montierro said.
Despite of having limited time to practice, the team still managed to get their first win of the season.
Manalansan led the scoring for Pirates with 27, followed by Capacete with 18, then both Sarmiento and Lloren got 12 points a piece.
“Advantage namin is height tsaka sa katawan”, Manalansan said.
Janet Sison, head coach of Xavier School Nuvali, believes that the team still has a lot to improve.
“Ah kase ngayon yung team na ‘to bago pa eh, 2 years pa lang, so kailangan marami pang ma-improve, ang basic skills ng mga bata, lahat depensa, opensa, kailangan pa naming pag-aralan iyon. Kaya kami sumali dito para makakuha talaga ng experience,” Coach Sison said.
ENDING THE DAY RIGHT!
LPU Laguna continued their winning performance as they defeated CI Canlubang for their last game of the day, 90-68.
The face-off was heated when both teams exchanged hoops. People were on the edge of their seats from the first quarter until the very end.
Ley Acosta led the Junior Pirates with 24 points to seal the second win of the day. He shared the team’s secret.
“Maganda ang teamwork namin is, ano, nakuha namin yung tine-training namin,” Acosta said.
He also commended their opponents for pushing them to their limits.“Pisikal sila maglaro, pero magaling naman“, he added.
With more games ahead of them, Acosta mentioned that they will train harder to improve on their shooting and free throws.
3×3 Basketball
Meanwhile, Mascardo, Serdon, De Torres and Tagabuan, got their first win in the 3×3 Basketball competition. They hooped 14 points against the 6 points of UPHSD.
Both teams struggled with their shooting. Prosper Mascardo of LPU-Laguna said that they relied on their mental toughness to win the game.
“Ang naging mindset po namin ay maipanalo ang bawat game at ibigay lang ang best namin,“ Mascardo said. – JPS
