LPU-Laguna highschool robotics team was hailed champion over 14 other competing schools in the 2015 Hytec-SME International Robotics Challenge held at SMX Convention Center, November 7, 2015.

It was the first off-campus robotics competition joined in by LPU-Laguna. Eigth grade students, Gabriel Grindulo, John Lexter Laguinday and Marion Nikko Macalalad faced the challenge to compete with prestigious schools and schools whose name are already established in the field of robotics.

Among other schools who competed were De La Salle Zobel, De La Salle Araneta, Philippine Science High School, Southville International School, First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities, Claret School of Quezon City, Makati Science High School, Marikina Science High School, Philippine Normal University, Joy in Learning School, Sta. Elena High School, Islamic Studies Call and Guidance Philippines, and  La Salle Greenhills.

The challenge of the competition is to build a robot which can move around an obstacle autonomously and can also be controlled after hurdling the obstacle to do the second task. In the second task, the remotely controlled robot must grab and push objects to an allocated space in the field. Each challenge was under time pressure.

LPU-Laguna garnered a total of 160 points from the judges which made them as champion of the competition. Philippine Science High School and Joy in Learning School were awarded as first and second runners up respectively.

“Everyone in the competition are skilled when it comes to robotics and we only had less than a week to prepare for the competition. What we did is that we prayed and I believe that our faith really helped us.” said Richmond Romero, computer teacher and coach of the robotics team.

In 2014 and early 2015, LPU-Laguna College of Engineering has sponsored robotics competition in cooperation with Hytec Power,Inc where LPU-Laguna Highschool robotics team placed 1st runner up 2014 and as champion in early 2015. (By Von Rein Pasco)
